What is a

Co-op Apartment Living?

Duncan Mills Co-op is a inclusive community. Individuals and families of all income levels, cultural backgrounds and physical abilities are welcome to live here. Diversity is designed into our co-op’s membership, because this is the root of a rich community life. A housing co-op is people getting together to provide themselves with housing at cost. All adult residents, 16 years and over are members of the Duncan Mill Labourers' Local 183 Co-op, a non-profit organization, which owns the homes. Co-op members enjoy long time housing security. Each member pays a monthly housing charge that covers the mortgage, taxes and operating expenses.

To ensure housing affordability, financial assistance is provided by the Province of Ontario. Over the long term, co-op housing becomes much less expensive than comparable rental units. As a member of the co-op, you will have a direct say in the management and maintenance of the co-op. Members elect a Board of Directors, working committees and vote on all major policies.

Family Housing

The Labourers’ International Union of North America, Local 183, is the sponsor of the family housing co-operative at the intersection of Don Mills Road and Duncan Mill Road in the City of North York.

Local 183 was officially chartered in 1959 to represent Ontario Hydro construction workers. By 1958 the Local expanded its jurisdiction to include all construction workers in south central Ontario region, and now represents over 15,000 members, throughout the Greater Metropolitan Toronto area.

The Local is committed to the development of housing for moderate income earners within its membership as well as the general community. Over the years the union has developed two non-profit projects in Mississauga, as well as this co-operative.

Modern Amenities – Built in 1993, architect’s design, air conditioned, upgraded carpet in bedrooms, hardwood parquet flooring in living/dining areas, vinyl tile in kitchen and foyer, enclosed solariums in all units, on site lounge with walk out to roof deck, recreation room, hobby room and laundry facilities and extensively landscaped play area for children.
